Chanukah lights are lit after sunset (usually after night). This is because sunset represents hard times. We recognize that even the hard times, contain a lot of light and goodness, and they prepare us for a goodness that will come afterwards.
The Meor Einayim teaches that the wick represents each individual and the oil his wisdom [his awareness of Hashem and Torah knowledge].
